L2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services – Roadbuilding (Construction) – High Friction Surfacing – Machine

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services-Roadbuilding – High Friction Surfacing – Machine qualification has been developed for delivery in a working environment; this means you need to be employed to study this qualification. It has been designed to develop and recognise your skills, knowledge and competence so that you can work in Roadbuilding – High Friction Surfacing – Machine within the construction industry or progress onto further learning.

This qualification supports the Learner to attain enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills with associated underpinning knowledge. Although part of an apprenticeship, this qualification is available outside of an apprenticeship where either the learner’s circumstances prevent them undertaking a full apprenticeship or where their prior skills and knowledge mean they do not require all components of the apprenticeship. In addition, industry will accept the qualification on its own as entry to a job role.

The learner will learn key practical skills and knowledge in these mandatory units:
– Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
– Conforming to Productive Working Practises in the Workplace
– Preparing, operating and controlling operations of road plant or machinery in the workplace

The learner will also learn key practical skills and knowledge in one of the following optional units:
– Establishing Work Area Protection and Safety in the Workplace
– Segregating the Area for Highways Works in the Workplace

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services – Roadbuilding – concrete Paving – machine qualification has been developed for delivery in a working environment; this means you need to be employed to study this qualification. It has been designed to develop and recognise your skills, knowledge and competence so that you can work in Roadbuilding – Concrete Paving – machine within the construction industry or progress onto further learning.

Loading Shovel

The Objectives of the Course are to enable delegates to: 

  • Carry out pre-start inspection.
  • Operate safely under varying site conditions.
  • Carry out minor adjustments and routine service.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of responsibilities under relevant legislation.
  • Operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers manual and instructions and accepted good practice.

The course will include:

  • Introduction to machine
  • Relevant regulations/legislation
  • Pre-start inspections/maintenance
  • General driving (including inclines)
  • Vehicle loading
  • Use of 4 in 1 bucket (if applicable) Controls and instruments
  • Excavating from bank/stockpile
  • Daily and routine maintenance
  • Cleaning of working area
  • Levelling and reinstatement
  • Stockpiling and forming
  • Theory and Practical Tests

All candidates will complete the NPORS assessment and on successful completion will be issued with an NPORS Operators Card.

 

Slinger Banks-man

The aim of this course is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the relevant operational and safety requirements applicable to slinging and signalling as a banksman, working in the construction industry and allied environments.

Course Content:

  • Gaining a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and responsibilities as a Slinger / Signaller
  • Being able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Being able to locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. Explaining their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
  • Being able to interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation
  • Undertaking all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identifying non-serviceable items
  • Explaining procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service
  • Identifying and explaining centres of gravity and calculating estimated weights of loads
  • Setting up exclusion zone explaining actions required for emergency actions, identifying any overhead hazards
  • Identifying and maintaining PPE appropriate for Slinger / Signaller use
  • Securing various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring load balance, security and integrity
  • Directing and guiding the movement of loads to different types of location using different methods of communication
  • Environmental considerations
  • Carrying out all out-of service and securing procedures

On successful completion of the NPORS assessment candidates will be issued with an NPORS Operators card.

 

 

 

Skid Steer Loader

The Objectives of the Course are to enable delegates to: 

  • Carry out pre-start inspection.
  • Operate safely under varying site conditions.
  • Carry out minor adjustments and routine service.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of responsibilities under relevant legislation.
  • Operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers manual and instructions and accepted good practice.

Telescopic Handler

 

The Objectives of the Course are to enable delegates to:

  • Be able to operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers instructions and accepted good practice.
  • Carry out a pre-shift inspection.
  • Be able to load and unload vehicles and static racking.
  • Understand the causes of instability of the truck and loads.
  • Have sufficient knowledge and practical skills to successfully complete the NPORS assessment

Road Roller

 

The Objectives of the Course are to enable delegates to:

  •  Be able to operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers instructions and accepted good practice.
  •  Carry out a pre-shift inspection.
  •  Be able to operate safely under varying site conditions.
  •  Be able to carry out minor adjustments and routine services.
  •  Have sufficient knowledge and practical skills to successfully complete the NPORS assessment.

Rear Tipping Dumper

The aim of the Course is to:

Provide thorough theory and practical training in the role of the Rear Tipping Dumper operative, enabling candidates to competently and safely carry out the role and pass therelevant NPORS assessments.

Course Summary: 

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with plant manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, relevant regulatio/legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks
  • Configure and set for travel (site and highway)
  • Travel over rough, undulating ground, steep inclines and level surfaces – loaded and unloaded
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces whilst carrying loads
  • Ensure the suitability of the tipping and loading area
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Position to receive loads
  • Comply with plant loading procedures
  • Ensure load integrity and security
  • Transfer loads to different locations
  • Discharge loads into trenches and over edges
  •  Maintain safe and tidy working areas
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

On successful completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
  • Carry out all pre-use and running checks
  • Set the dump truck for site and road travel
  • Travel the dump truck over differing types of terrain, including rough, undulating ground, in a loaded and unloaded state
  • Travel up and down substantial inclines in a loaded and unloaded state
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction, in a loaded and unloaded state
  • Position the dump truck to receive loads
  • Explain precautions to be taken for overhead services and other hazards
  • Comply with loading procedures
  • Ensure load integrity and security
  • Discharge loads into trenches or over edges
  • Place the dump truck in an out of service condition
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter

All candidates will complete the NPORS assessment and on successful completion will be issued with an NPORS Operators Card.

Overhead Crane

The Objectives of the course: 

  •  Operate safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers manual and instructions and accepted good practice.
  • Operate the crane safely in response to given tasks and signals.
  •  Carry out daily maintenance.
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of crane terminology.
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of signs given by slinger signaller.
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of responsibilities under relevant legislation.
  •  Recognise defects and hazards that affect crane motions.
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of lift plans.
