The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services-Roadbuilding – High Friction Surfacing – Machine qualification has been developed for delivery in a working environment; this means you need to be employed to study this qualification. It has been designed to develop and recognise your skills, knowledge and competence so that you can work in Roadbuilding – High Friction Surfacing – Machine within the construction industry or progress onto further learning.
This qualification supports the Learner to attain enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills with associated underpinning knowledge. Although part of an apprenticeship, this qualification is available outside of an apprenticeship where either the learner’s circumstances prevent them undertaking a full apprenticeship or where their prior skills and knowledge mean they do not require all components of the apprenticeship. In addition, industry will accept the qualification on its own as entry to a job role.

The Objectives of the Course are to enable delegates to:
- Carry out pre-start inspection.
- Operate safely under varying site conditions.
- Carry out minor adjustments and routine service.
- Demonstrate an understanding of responsibilities under relevant legislation.
- Operate the machine safely and correctly in accordance with manufacturers manual and instructions and accepted good practice.
The course will include:
- Introduction to machine
- Relevant regulations/legislation
- Pre-start inspections/maintenance
- General driving (including inclines)
- Vehicle loading
- Use of 4 in 1 bucket (if applicable) Controls and instruments
- Excavating from bank/stockpile
- Daily and routine maintenance
- Cleaning of working area
- Levelling and reinstatement
- Stockpiling and forming
- Theory and Practical Tests
All candidates will complete the NPORS assessment and on successful completion will be issued with an NPORS Operators Card.
The aim of this course is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the relevant operational and safety requirements applicable to slinging and signalling as a banksman, working in the construction industry and allied environments.
Course Content:
- Gaining a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and responsibilities as a Slinger / Signaller
- Being able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation.
- Being able to locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. Explaining their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
- Being able to interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation
- Undertaking all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identifying non-serviceable items
- Explaining procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service
- Identifying and explaining centres of gravity and calculating estimated weights of loads
- Setting up exclusion zone explaining actions required for emergency actions, identifying any overhead hazards
- Identifying and maintaining PPE appropriate for Slinger / Signaller use
- Securing various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring load balance, security and integrity
- Directing and guiding the movement of loads to different types of location using different methods of communication
- Environmental considerations
- Carrying out all out-of service and securing procedures
On successful completion of the NPORS assessment candidates will be issued with an NPORS Operators card.
